knowing What's Good for You

Sometimes even animals don't know what's good for them. Cubs stray too far from their dens. Puppies trot out onto the highway. Kittens climb up trees they can't climb down.

Other animals seem to know what's coming, but they self-destruct just the same. Certain male bees get ripped open by the queen during mating. Male praying mantises are often eaten by their mates. Both Mother and Father Octopus look after their babies so diligently that some have neglected to feed themselves... and starved to death.

Why do we do things we know aren't good for us? Maybe you don't abuse drugs or drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes. Maybe your self-destructive behaviors aren't that obvious. You don't get enough sleep, or you eat too much or eat the wrong things. You feed your mind junk by watching TV night and day.

Do you cheat, lie, or refuse to ask for help? Do you hang on to bitterness and let it eat away at you? Or maybe you keep repeating the same destructive actions, like chasing after someone who keeps hurting you or getting in your teacher's face.

Take better care of yourself. You are extraordinarily valuable. You've been created by God, who didn't have to make you but chose to anyway. God has given you a purpose in on earth, Jesus would have gone through the Crucifixion and Resurrection just for you. that's how much he loves you.

God's Spirit lives inside you. You are God's temple. When you mistreat yourself, you're mistreating God. Do the things you know are good for you.

"Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body." -- 1 CORINTHIANS 6:19-20

I can Jump Higher than You CAN

A kangaroo can jump 10 feet straight up and hop 40 feet in a broad jump. Not bad. But a grasshopper can jump 10 to 20 times its length, which would be like a kangaroo jumping 120 feet.

And the winner is .... Fleas can jump 13 inches in a broad jump and a foot into the air. That's 300 times a flea's length, which would be like the kangaroo jumping six football fields.

If you weren't born competitive, you probably started competing, or at least comparing, when you were pretty young. As soon as you start getting grades, you try to find out who's the smartest in the class, the best reader, the best writer. At recess, you have races to see who's the fastest. Soon you find out who's the best batter or the best at shooting hoops.

It doesn't take long to start comparing your clothes to someone else's. you go home with a friend, and you can't help seeing that her house is nicer than yours.

Comparing and competing may be natural, but those habits can also be destructive. Even if you come out on top now because your're a big fish in a little pond, it's a big world out there. There will always be someone faster, smarter, better looking than you. So what?

If you have to compare and compete, try being your own competition. Do better in math this year tan you did last. that's success -- not that you're better than your buddies. Have fun playing sports, even if you'll never score the winning goal. If you love music, join the band. You don't have to be the best tuba player around.

Measure yourself by yourself, and leave the judging to God.

"Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won't need to compare yourself to anyone else." -- Galations 6:4
